Anglo American Copper Output Flat
By Anthony O. Goriainoff
Anglo American said copper production for the second quarter was flat and reiterated guidance for the year.
The London-listed miner said Thursday that copper production was 173,200 tons, roughly unchanged compared with the year prior. The company said this was mostly due to higher throughput at Chile's Los Bronces, offset by processing lower-grade stockpile ore at Collahuasi, and anticipated lower grades at Peru's Quellaveco project.
Iron ore production fell to 15.4 million tons from 15.9 million tons. This was mostly due to planned plant maintenance at South Africa's Kumba and the impact of lower ore grade and mass recovery at Brazil's Minas-Rio mine.
Diamond output rose to 7.8 million carats from 4.1 million carats.
Steelmaking coal production declined to 2 million tons from 2.1 million tons, with nickel production down 4% to 9,100 tons.
The company backed its production and unit guidance for the year. It lowered overall copper-unit costs to around $1.45 a pound from $1.72 a pound, due to higher by-product credits and favorable exchange rate movements.
