Waste Connections Lifts Revenue Outlook After Higher 2Q Profit

By Elias Schisgall

Waste Connections lifted its full-year revenue outlook after overcoming cost pressures to report a higher profit in the second quarter.

The solid-waste services company on Wednesday said it now expects to generate between $10.02 billion and $10.05 billion in revenue, above a previous outlook of revenue between $9.9 billion and $9.95 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet are expecting full-year revenue of $9.93 billion.

The company lifted its outlook, Chief Executive Officer Ronald Mittelstaedt said, after managing to expand its margins despite cost pressures from spiking fuel prices.

"Our outperformance, in spite of ongoing geopolitical instability and the associated uncertainty, is a reflection of our differentiated strategy and a purposeful culture, both of which will continue to set us apart," he said.

Still, the company cut its profit outlook, projecting a profit of about $1.17 billion. It was previously targeting a profit between $1.22 billion and $1.24 billion.

The company also reported a profit of $296.4 million, or $1.17 a share, in the quarter ended June 30. That compares with a profit of $290.3 million, or $1.12 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, the company reported adjusted earnings of $1.50 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting $1.36 a share.

Revenue rose to $2.56 billion from $2.41 billion a year prior. Analysts were expecting $2.53 billion in revenue.
