GSK Stops Development of Drug Candidate for Chronic Cough

By Adria Calatayud

GSK said it decided to halt the development of an experimental drug as a treatment for chronic cough after the medicine missed the key goal in a late-stage clinical study.

The U.K. drugmaker said Friday that the drug, camlipixant, achieved mixed results in two trials--with one hitting the primary objective of significant reductions in cough frequency after 12 weeks of treatment and a second falling short for the same goal after 24 weeks.

The aggregate data point to limited efficacy that is unlikely to transform patient care, GSK said. As a result, the company decided to discontinue further development of camlipixant in refractory chronic cough, it added.

A mid-stage trial for the same drug in adults with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea and mixed bowel habits will continue to evaluate efficacy and safety, GSK said.
