Atlas Copco Orders Rise on Semiconductor Industry Demand

By Dominic Chopping

STOCKHOLM--Atlas Copco said it expects near-term customer activity to remain at the current level as it reported strong order growth driven by increased demand from the semiconductor industry.

The Swedish industrial tool maker said demand for its equipment and services improved notably and order intake in the quarter was better than expected.

The company received orders worth 50.95 billion Swedish kronor in the quarter, up 27% on year and compared with a FactSet forecast of 45.08 billion kronor.

"The demand for Atlas Copco Group's products, services and solutions improved significantly, particularly from the semiconductor industry," said Chief Executive Vagner Rego.

"We delivered double-digit order growth in all business areas and saw high activity level among almost all of our customer segments."

Order intake for vacuum equipment increased sharply from a year earlier, driven by the semiconductor industry, while order intake for its gas, process, industrial and portable compressors saw solid growth, it said.

Industrial assembly equipment and vision solutions orders also increased, while the service business continued to grow in all business areas and regions.

It reported group net profit of 7.06 billion kronor, up from 6.52 billion kronor a year earlier, as revenue rose 9.1% to 44.97 billion kronor.

Analysts polled by FactSet had expected net profit of 7.09 billion kronor on revenue of 43.99 billion kronor.
