BMW North America Recalling More Than 29,000 Vehicles Due to Starter Short-Circuit Risk

Bayerische Motoren Werke is recalling more than 29,000 cars in the U.S. due to the risk the engine starter system could corrode, causing a short circuit and potentially a fire.
The Transportation Department's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in a notice said it had been notified of the safety recall by BMW of North America of certain 2018-to-2020 530e xDrive, 2017-to-2019 740Le xDrive, 2018-to-2020 530e iPerformance, and 2016-to-2018 330e iPerformance vehicles.
Owners of the cars have been advised to park outside and away from buildings until a fix can be made. Dealers will replace the engine starter, free of charge.
The recall potentially affects as many as 29,119 vehicles. According to the safety report, the engine starter in some vehicles relay may corrode, causing the relay to overheat and short-circuit.
