BMW's First-Half Sales Hit By Weak China Performance

By Joshua Kirby

BMW said a sharp drop in sales in China hit total sales over the first half of the year, though the group saw gains in other markets.

The German auto maker delivered around 1.16 million vehicles between January and June, 4.2% fewer than in the same period last year, it said Friday. In China, sales dropped by 20%, accelerating to 30% over the second quarter of the year alone. By contrast, sales rose by 5.4% in Europe, BMW's largest market, and by 3% in the Americas.

"Despite challenges worldwide, we achieved positive sales results in the U.S. and Europe," said Jochen Goller, BMW's board member responsible for brands and sales.

Sales of fully electric vehicles showed momentum over the second quarter, BMW said, with the start of deliveries of the group's new electric iX3 model.
