Thailand Approves Investment Plans Worth Nearly $2 Billion
By Amanda Lee
Thailand has approved investment plans worth nearly $2 billion across projects including artificial intelligence, as the nation seeks to become a regional data-center hub.
The $1.99 billion investment will cover nine major investment projects in high-value sectors including advanced electronics and digital businesses, aviation, clean energy and food, the Thailand Board of Investment said Wednesday.
East Asian technology supply-chains firms account for most of the investments in Thailand's advanced electronics and digital sector. These include Datasection (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Japan's Datasection Inc., which will invest $235.2 million to build high-performance GPU servers for data hosting in Bangkok and Pathum Thani province.
"This specialized hardware will directly power advanced AI applications and digital businesses in the region," the BOI said.
The country has also approved a $688.7 million investment by Switzerland's Nestlé (Thai) Co., Ltd. to expand its production facilities in the Samut Prakan province.
Thailand plans to raise investment as a share of gross domestic product to 30% from about 22%-23%, Finance Vice Minister Santitarn Sathirathai said Thursday.
The Southeast Asian country is among regional economies benefiting from the ongoing AI boom.
Its stock market is among the region's best performers this year, driven by AI-related stocks. Delta Electronics (Thailand), a maker of power systems for AI data centers, has surged 76% this year, pushing its market capitalization above $100 billion in February.
