By Ronnie Harui

Seven & I Holdings' net profit climbed 24% in its first quarter, boosted by sharply higher earnings from its overseas convenience-store business.

The Japanese owner of 7-Eleven said Thursday that net profit rose to 60.60 billion yen, equivalent to $372.7 million, from Y49.01 billion a year earlier. That beat the estimate of Y42.00 billion in a poll of analysts by data provider Visible Alpha.

Revenue for the three months ended May fell to Y2.38 trillion from Y2.78 trillion a year earlier, while operating profit jumped to Y105.04 billion from Y65.08 billion.

Operating profit for its overseas convenience-store business surged to Y65.59 billion in the quarter from Y8.69 billion a year earlier, while that for its domestic convenience-store business declined to Y52.24 billion from Y54.53 billion.

Seven & I raised its earnings guidance for the fiscal year that began in March. It now expects revenue of Y10.43 trillion versus Y9.45 trillion projected previously, and net profit of Y278.00 billion compared with Y270.00 billion forecast previously.
