Telstra Restoring Services After Outage Hits Trains, Payments

By Stuart Condie

SYDNEY--Telstra said it is working to restore mobile and data services, after Australia's largest network suffered intermittent outages that halted trains and hit payments.

Telstra on Wednesday said that the nationwide issue began at about 4:30 a.m. Sydney time and had been caused by server problems at company owned data centers in Sydney and Melbourne.

The servers, or nodes, help keep time across the network and were not operating as expected, Telstra Chief Financial Officer Michael Ackland said.

The ASX-listed company did not know what had caused the problem but had seen no evidence that the issue was a result of hacking, Ackland said.

"We have nothing to indicate malicious activity. We continue to remain curious," Ackland said.

Telstra said it had restored about 90% of calls and data sessions.

The public transport operator in New South Wales state, which includes Sydney, said some services were disrupted by the issue. Payments provider Tyro said some of its terminals were experiencing outages.
