Inflation Expectations Increase at Short and Medium-Term Horizons — NY Fed

By Jessica Coacci

Consumers' expectations for future inflation increased in June at one and three-year horizons but still held steady in the long-run, according to a New York Fed survey.

Consumers' expectations for future inflation over the next year increased to 3.7% in June, the highest level in nearly three years. At the three-year horizon, they increased to the highest level since June 2022, according to the latest monthly version of the New York Fed's Survey of Consumer Expectations.

While the survey showed movements in short and medium-term expectations, inflation expectations at the five-year were unchanged at 3.0%, a less worrisome signal for the central bank.

Federal Reserve officials keep a close eye on long-term inflation expectations because the numbers serve as a gauge of the Fed's credibility back to 2%, and because expectations themselves can be self-fulfilling.

Even if consumers don't know that the Fed's inflation target is 2%, if they anticipate higher prices in the future, they may accelerate purchases, ask for larger raises, and worsen their overall sentiment toward any economic progress-all moves that can themselves push inflation up or make progress back to the Fed's target of 2% more difficult.

Consumer inflation has risen due to higher gasoline prices tied to the Iran conflict, but as oil prices begin to moderate, consumer sentiment has improved with economists predicting the worst of the inflation surge from rising energy prices is behind households.

More data on consumer inflation will come from the Labor Department next week.

The NY Fed survey also found that labor market expectations improved, with job-finding expectations increasing. In addition, job-loss expectations and expectations about the unemployment rate declined.
