MDA Space Wins Contract for Japan's Next-Generation Satellite Program

By Adriano Marchese

MDA Space has been selected by Mitsubishi Electric to supply digital payload and antenna systems for Japan's next-generation defense communications satellite.

The Canadian space technology company said Thursday that it will design and manufacture the digital payload, antennas and various subsystems for the defense communications satellite program ordered by the Japan Ministry of Defense.

The satellite program will replace DSN-2, also known as Kirameki-2, in geostationary orbit.

The work will be split across MDA's U.K. and Canadian operations in Montreal. The U.K. team will deliver the digital beam-forming technology for advanced, anti-jamming multi-beam payload, and the Montreal facility will manufacture and test the systems before final integration in Japan, MDA said.

The company said the contract adds to its backlog in the second quarter of fiscal 2026.
