NiSource Gets Regulatory Approval for Amazon Data Center Project

By Katherine Hamilton

NiSource said it has received regulatory approval to provide power for Amazon data centers in northern Indiana.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved the settlement agreement, special contract and related power purchase agreement between Amazon and the utility company, NiSource said Tuesday.

The regulator also approved proposed generation resources, including combined-cycle gas turbines and battery energy storage systems.

The agreements are designed so that data center customers such as Amazon fund their own generation and transmission infrastructure, with the goal of keeping energy costs for households down.

As part of the deal, the parties involved agreed to support expedited schedules for future agreements.
