UniCredit Secures Additional Stake of 12.51% in Initial Offer Period for Commerzbank

By Aimee Look

UniCredit said it secured an additional 12.51% stake in Commerzbank after the close of its initial offer period this week.

Shareholders in Commerzbank who have not yet accepted the offer can still do so, UniCredit said in a filing Friday. The Italian lender said it will re-open the offer between June 20 and July 3.

UniCredit already holds 26.77% of shares without the tendered ones, it said.

The rate adds momentum to UniCredit Chief Executive Officer Andrea Orcel's pursuit of Commerzbank. UniCredit in March announced an all-stock offer for full control of Commerzbank that at the time valued the shares it didn't already own at 24 billion euros. The value of the bid has fluctuated since then.
