GSK, Spero Therapeutics Gain U.S. Approval for Utebzi

GSK and Spero Therapeutics said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved Utebzi, an oral antibiotic to treat complicated urinary tract infections.

The British pharmaceutical group has an exclusive global licensing agreement with Spero Therapeutics for the antibiotic, which it said should be available to U.S. patients by the end of the year.

The company said approval came after Phase 3 data that showed Utebzi wasn't inferior compared to intravenous imipenem-cilastatin in hospitalized patients with complicated urinary tract infections.
