Apple Faces Italian Competition Probe Over Cloud Services
By Adam Whittaker
The Italian Competition Authority has launched a probe into whether Apple's operating systems disadvantage third-party cloud providers
The Digital Markets Act requires that Apple give third-party providers effective interoperability with hardware and software features across its operating systems, including iCloud.
Apple is being investigated after the authority saw indications that third-party providers of consumer cloud services may not be placed on an equal footing as Apple's iCloud, it said.
The regulator said Tuesday it appears Apple doesn't allow alternative cloud storage services to use its iOS and iPadOS features to fully backup their data, while those same features are available to Apple's iCloud.
The probe was launched in cooperation with the European Commission, the regulator said.
