European Commission Conditionally Approves Holcim's $2.14 Billion Acquisition of Xella
By Aimee Look
The European Commission greenlit Swiss building-materials supplier Holcim's $2.14 billion acquisition of Xella, on the condition it divests a blocks plant in Romania.
Holcim said in October last year it would purchase the Germany-based walling solutions company for 1.85 billion euros, or $2.14 billion. The deal is part of its broader strategy to expand its building solutions segment through 2030, the company said at the time.
The commission on Friday said its approval of the deal is conditional upon Holcim's full divestment of its AAC blocks plant---which makes lightweight concrete---in Adjud, Romania.
Holcim had offered to divest the plant in Romania to quell competition concerns regarding overlap in the two parties' AAC blocks businesses, the commission said.
