Merck Bolsters Animal-Health Unit With Deal to Buy Targan
By Colin Kellaher
Merck & Co. has agreed to buy agricultural-technology company Targan for an undisclosed amount in a deal that expands the drugmaker's animal-health business.
Merck on Thursday said the acquisition, slated to close in the third quarter, adds Targan's WingScan automated solution, which uses vision technology to identify and sort chicks by gender, processing up to 160,000 chicks an hour.
Merck, based in Rahway, N.J., said it has invested in Targan since 2017 and has been one of the Raleigh, N.C., company's largest shareholders.
