Alibaba Cloud Opens Two New Data Centers in Malaysia's Johor
By Ying Xian Wong
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia--Alibaba Group's cloud-computing arm has established two new data centers in Malaysia's Johor state as part of efforts to meet growing demand for cloud computing and artificial-intelligence services in the Southeast Asian country.
The new Johor public cloud region brings Alibaba Cloud's data-center footprint in Malaysia to five facilities, making the country its largest infrastructure base in Southeast Asia, the company said Tuesday. The new facilities are part of the $53 billion investment in AI and cloud infrastructure Alibaba announced in 2025.
The company first invested in Malaysia in 2017 with a twin data-center deployment, and added a third facility last year. With the Johor expansion, Alibaba Cloud's global infrastructure now spans 104 availability zones across 32 regions.
Alibaba Cloud said the Johor facilities will provide a broad range of services, including computing, storage, networking, databases, security and cloud-native applications. The company also plans to roll out a suite of agentic AI services to Malaysia in the second half of this year.
Malaysia's Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the investment will strengthen the country's position as a key destination for AI-ready infrastructure and support its goal of becoming an AI nation by 2030.
"Malaysia remains a strategic key market for us in Southeast Asia," said Choong Hon Keat, general manager of Malaysia at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.
Alibaba Cloud is also working with local companies, including TNG Digital and YTL AI Labs, to support Malaysia's AI development and digital transformation initiatives, it said.
