SEC Proposes Scrapping Climate-Related Disclosure Rules

By Dean Seal

The Securities and Exchange Commission wants to officially do away with requirements for companies to report climate change information.

The agency on Friday called for a formal rescission of its climate-related disclosure rules that were put forth under the previous administration.

The rules were approved by the SEC in March 2024, though they were paused a month later amid a series of lawsuits opposing them. The agency stopped defending the rules in court in May 2025 after SEC leadership transitioned under the Trump administration. The following September, an appellate court paused lawsuits against the rules so that the agency could review them and propose changes.

The SEC now says that the rules exceed the scope of its statutory authority. Even if they didn't, the rules are unnecessary and inconsistent with a materiality-based approach to disclosure, the agency said.

A public comment period for the proposal is set to run for 60 days.
