Abbvie Gets FDA Approval for Blood Cancer Treatment

Abbvie received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its drug treating people with a rare form of blood cancer.

Decnupaz was approved to treat adults with Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm, an ultra-rare and aggressive form of leukemia, Abbvie said Wednesday.

The approval is based on data from a Phase 1/2 trial evaluating Decnupaz's safety and efficacy. Newly diagnosed patients in the trial had a composite complete response rate of 69.7%.

The disease typically affects adult men between ages 60 and 70. It often presents as skin lesions and can rapidly spread to bone marrow, lymph nodes and the central nervous system.

Many patients experience relapse even after treatment with intensive chemotherapy, which can include stem cell transplantation, Abbvie said.
