Firefly Aerospace Wins $75 Million NASA Subcontract
By Dean Seal
Firefly Aerospace has been awarded a $75 million subcontract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to deliver four drones to the Moon.
The space- and defense-technology company said Tuesday the subcontract calls for it to deliver the drones to the Moon's south pole in support of NASA's MoonFall mission, part of the initial phase of the agency's effort to build a lunar base.
Drone delivery is targeted to launch no earlier than 2028, Firefly said.
At launch, Firefly's Elytra spacecraft is set to carry the drones during a 45-day trip to the Moon and enter lunar orbit. From there, it will deorbit and perform a braking maneuver to deploy the drones about 50 kilometers above the Moon's south pole.
Firefly already has a growing portfolio of spacecraft missions, including three additional missions to the Moon through NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative.
