Canada Nearing Deal to Sell Germany Liquified Natural Gas
By Paul Vieira
OTTAWA--Canada is expected to unveil a deal on Wednesday that secures the sale of liquefied natural gas from the country's west coast to Germany, with shipments expected to begin in the early 2030s, according to two people familiar with the matter.
If a deal is signed it will be a major win for Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has spent time since becoming leader last year traveling abroad trying to drum up investment in Canada and capitalize on the country's vast oil-and-gas reserves.
The deal envisages German state-owned energy company SEFE agreeing to purchase LNG from a proposed floating terminal off British Columbia's northern coast, according to one of the people.
Bloomberg earlier reported on the transaction.
The venture is backed by Western LNG, which counts Blackstone Energy Transition Partners as a major investor, and is also co-owned by a local indigenous group, Nisga'a Nation. Carney in November pledged the federal government's support to the project, and said it would become the second-largest LNG facility in the country.
Representatives for Western LNG, Nisga'a Nation and SEFE did not respond to requests for comment.
The floating terminal, known as Ksi Lisims LNG, is expected to operate two floating natural gas liquefaction structures, which together would export up to 12 million metric tonnes per year of LNG.
