Airtel Africa Shares Jump after Major Shareholder Mulls Increasing Stake

By Ian Walker

Airtel Africa shares hit an all-time high after the company's majority shareholder said it was considering increasing its shareholding in the group.

Shares in London were up 48.6 pence, or 13%, at 415.60 pence in early afternoon European trading, leading the FTSE 100-index risers. They are currently up 17% over the year to date.

Bharti Airtel--which owns around 63% of the company--said Sunday that it was calling a meeting for May 13 to consider a reorganization of its subsidiary companies' shareholding frameworks, including Airtel Africa.

The company said that the reorganization could include a consolidation or acquisition of shares in its subsidiary companies.

Airtel Africa declined to comment on the statement.
