Intesa Posts Net Profit Rise as Corporate, Investment Banking Drives Growth
By Adria Calatayud
Intesa Sanpaolo posted a higher first-quarter net profit thanks to top-line growth, with its corporate and investment banking arm driving the increase.
The Italian bank said Friday that it made a net profit of 2.76 billion euros ($3.24 billion) for the quarter, up 5.6% compared with the year-earlier period. Analysts polled by Visible Alpha had forecast net profit at 2.62 billion euros.
Intesa said this was the best quarterly result in its history.
Operating income, the group's top-line figure, was up 5.3% at 7.15 billion euros. The bank said its performance was supported by balanced growth across all revenue components, citing strong contributions from fees and insurance activities.
The bank's top-line benefited from a 24% jump in operating income at its corporate and investment banking arm.
Intesa confirmed its full-year outlook, saying it still expects net profit at around 10 billion euros.
