Wal-Mart de Mexico 1Q Profit Inches Up 1.5%

By Anthony Harrup

MEXICO CITY--Wal-Mart de Mexico reported a small increase in first-quarter net profit as sales rose, while higher expenses ate into operating gains.

Walmex, a unit of Arkansas-based Walmart, reported net profit of 12.5 billion Mexican pesos ($719.5 million) for the January-March period, equivalent to MXN0.723 a share and up 1.5% from the first quarter of 2025.

Revenue increased 1.7% to MXN245.02 billion, with same-store sales up 3.1% in Mexico and 0.9% in Central America. Average ticket per customer rose 4% in Mexico while store traffic declined 0.9%. Central America saw a 0.3% decline in customers, and a 1.2% rise in average ticket.

In constant currency terms, sales in Mexico rose 4.4% and in Central America 2.5%.

"While we know the consumer environment is not optimal and we continue outpacing the market, we also know that we must do better to increase traffic," chief financial officer Paulo Garcia said. "We expect stronger quarters to come following continuous improvement of our fundamentals."

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, a measure of profitability, slipped 0.4% to MXN24.98 billion.

General expenses rose 4.4% largely due to investment in new stores and e-commerce in both regions, Walmex said. The company opened 14 stores in Mexico and three in Central America during the quarter, ending March with 3,330 in Mexico and 952 in Central America.
