EssilorLuxottica Books Continued Sales Growth as AI Glasses Keep Momentum

By Joshua Kirby

EssilorLuxottica said sales continued to rise apace in the first quarter of the year, boosted by demand for the artificial-intelligence-powered glasses that the company hopes will fuel growth over the coming years.

The Franco-Italian eyecare behemoth made revenue of 7.13 billion euros ($8.37 billion) between January and March, it said Wednesday. That marks an 11% rise from the same period last year, adjusted for currency effects. The result was in line with the expectations of analysts polled by Visible Alpha ahead of the release.

The group--which has flagged surging demand for the AI-powered eyewear it manufactures in tandem with tech giant Meta--said smartglasses helped drive its sales over the quarter. EssilorLuxottica and Meta earlier this year launched a new Ray-Ban model aimed at wearers of prescription lenses.

The group last year sold more than 7 million pairs of smartglasses, and earlier this year said demand for the wearable tech should ensure "solid growth" in its top line over the years ahead.

"Momentum is reflected in the continued robust traction of our myopia management platform and in the strong results delivered by wearables," said Francesco Milleri, the group's chief executive, and Paul du Saillant, its deputy CEO.
