Rio Tinto 1Q Iron Ore, Copper Production Rises

By Rhiannon Hoyle

Rio Tinto said it produced more iron ore, copper and aluminum in the first quarter of the year, while reassuring investors of limited impacts to date from the conflict in the Middle East.

The world's second-biggest miner by market value reported a 13% increase in iron-ore production in Australia's Pilbara region, to 78.8 million metric tons. It said this was its second-highest first-quarter result since 2018.

Shipments from those operations, which account for the majority of Rio Tinto's profits, were weighed by two cyclones during the quarter. Sales were up 2% on year at 72.4 million tons.

Copper production rose by 9% to 229,000 tons, it said.
