Novo Nordisk Launches Discounted Subscription Program for Wegovy Obesity Drugs — Update

By Dominic Chopping

Novo Nordisk launched a new discounted subscription program for its Wegovy obesity drugs in the U.S. as it tries to win customers by offering a lower, predictable monthly price.

The Danish drugmaker said Tuesday that eligible patients who pay for the drugs themselves can opt for a three-, six- or 12-month subscription for the Wegovy shot and the two highest doses of the recently launched pill version of its blockbuster weight-loss treatment.

The company said the new plans will allow patients to save up to $600 a year on the pill and up to $1,200 a year on the injection.

As of Tuesday, patients can access the program through Ro, WeightWatchers and LifeMD, with Hims & Hers, Sesame and other telehealth providers coming online soon.

"The program is designed to reduce cost uncertainty and help people start and stay on [the] FDA-approved obesity treatment," Novo Nordisk said in a statement.

Wegovy injection pens are offered at $329 a month in the three-month plan, dropping to $299 a month for six months and $249 under the 12-month subscription, representing a saving $1,200 a year versus the former standard monthly price on the longest plan, it said.

The Wegovy pill will cost $289, $269 and $249 a month, saving up to $600 a year.

Lilly sells its competing injectable weight-loss drug Zepbound at cash prices ranging from $299 to $449.

Wegovy's new pricing structure aims to broaden access to the drugs and attract customers as it battles intense competition from Eli Lilly's rival obesity treatments and the continuing threat from copycat versions of its drugs sold through compounding pharmacies.

The companies have turned to telehealth companies to sell their drugs directly to patients online who are prepared to pay cash as a way to expand coverage, while cutting net prices by offering discounts to insurers and consumers, including through recent deals with the Trump administration.

Novo Nordisk has also already outlined plans to slash U.S. list prices of Wegovy and its diabetes drug Ozempic from next year to win patients who have been deterred by high out-of-pocket costs or lack of coverage from their health plans.
