Zymeworks Gets FDA Fast-Track Designation for ZW191 in Ovarian Cancer

  Zymeworks has won the Food and Drug Administration's fast-track designation for its ZW191 antibody-drug conjugate for patients with advanced or metastatic platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. 



  Antibody-drug conjugates, known as ADCs, work like guided missiles by pairing antibodies with toxic agents to fight cancer. 



  Zymeworks on Monday said ZW191 is engineered to target folate receptor alpha, a protein expressed in several tumor types, including about 75% of high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas. 



  The FDA's fast-track program is designed to facilitate the development and expedite the review of treatments for serious or potentially life-threatening illnesses with high unmet medical needs. 



  Biotechnology company Zymeworks said it is evaluating ZW191 in a Phase 1 study designed to assess safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and preliminary anti-tumor activity in patients with advanced solid tumors.
