Bristol Myers Squibb Gets Expanded Opdivo Approval in U.S., Europe

By Elias Schisgall

Bristol Myers Squibb received expanded approvals for its Opdivo cancer drug to treat classical Hodgkin Lymphoma from regulators in the U.S. and the European Union.

The pharmaceutical company said Friday that the Food and Drug Administration approved Opdivo, an immunotherapy known generically as nivolumab, in combination with doxorubicin, vinblastine and dacarbazine to treat classical Hodgkin Lymphoma in patients twelve years of age or older.

The European Commission also approved Opdivo in combination with brentuximab vedotin to treat relapsed or refractory cases of the disease in patients between five and 30 years old who have already received a prior line of therapy.

"These approvals represent a defining moment for people living with classical Hodgkin Lymphoma," Monica Shaw, the Princeton, N.J., company's senior vice president of oncology commercialization, said.

The European Medicines Agency is currently evaluating a submission based on the same study that led to the FDA approval, the company said.
