EU Competition Watchdog Assessing Cloud Lobby's Broadcom Complaint
By Edith Hancock
The European Commission's competition regulator is assessing cloud lobby group CISPE's complaint against Broadcom over its licensing of VMware, a spokesperson for the European Union executive arm said.
"We have received a complaint alleging that Broadcom's licensing of VMware products to cloud service providers infringes EU antitrust rules," the commission spokesperson said, adding that it is being assessed in line with the watchdog's procedures.
It comes after the group--which counts Amazon Web Services and Microsoft as associate members--complained to the EU over Broadcom's VMware licensing. It said the company signaled the termination of its VMware cloud service provider program in Europe in January and that the company's actions will force many European cloud providers to exit the market.
In response Thursday, a Broadcom spokesperson said: "Broadcom strongly disagrees with the allegations by CISPE, an organization funded by hyperscalers, which misrepresent the realities of the market."
"We continue to be committed to investing significantly in our European VMware cloud service provider partners helping them offer alternatives to the hyperscalers and meet the evolving needs of European businesses and organizations," they said.
