Frontier Airlines Defers Airbus Planes, Ends AerCap Lease Early
By Katherine Hamilton
Frontier Airlines deferred delivery of 69 Airbus planes and ended a lease with AerCap for 24 planes.
The low-cost carrier said Tuesday the Airbus planes are now expected to be delivered between 2031 and 2033, rather than 2027 to 2030.
Frontier also terminated leases associated with 24 A320neo aircraft from AerCap, which are currently in operation. Those leases were slated to expire in the next two to eight years, Frontier said.
The AerCap aircraft are expected to be returned during the second quarter of 2026, which will result in a reduction of about $400 million in both Frontier's operating lease right-of-use assets and its operating lease liabilities.
AerCap also agreed to 10 future sale-leaseback transactions for deliveries scheduled in 2028 and 2029.
The early return agreement with AerCap is expected to result in non-cash charges for a write-off of non-recoverable balances and accelerated depreciation.
Frontier anticipates the charges will be $125 million to $175 million and will be recognized in the first half of 2026. It also expects to have charges related to the early lease termination of $75 million to $95 million that will be substantially cash expenditures.
