Mexico's Cemex to Sell Some Assets in Colombia

By Anthony Harrup

MEXICO CITY--Mexican building materials company Cemex said it is selling part of its assets in Colombia for around $555 million as it focuses on operations in core markets, while maintaining a presence in the South American country.

Cemex has reached an agreement with the Holcim Group to sell a cement plant, a grinding mill, and ready-mix concrete, aggregates, mortar and admixture plants for $485 million, with the sale expected to close at the end of the year.

Cemex of Monterrey, Mexico said it is also negotiating with other third parties to sell its remaining assets in the same geographic area for an estimated $70 million.

Cemex will maintain two cement plants in Colombia with capacity of 1.6 million tons a year, a grinding mill, and ready-mix concrete plants and aggregates quarries.

The sales are part of Cemex's streamlining of its operations with focus on the U.S., Europe and Mexico, chief executive Jaime Muguiro said. "We began our portfolio rebalancing effort in 2018 and have accomplished most of what we have set out to do."

Holcim said the operations it is acquiring from Cemex represent projected 2026 sales of about $360 million and will complement its existing operations in Colombia.

"This acquisition will strengthen Holcim's presence in Colombia and accelerate growth in the attractive region of Latin America," Holcim chief executive Miljan Gutovic said.
