SoftBank Group's Credit Outlook Cut to Negative by S&P
By Kosaku Narioka
SoftBank Group's credit outlook was revised to negative from stable by S&P Global Ratings, which cited financial pressure following the Japanese company's additional investment in OpenAI.
The U.S. rating company said SoftBank Group's asset liquidity, portfolio quality and financial capacity are likely to deteriorate because of its additional huge investment in the ChatGPT maker.
S&P maintained its BB+ long-term issuer credit rating on SoftBank Group.
The rating company said it assumes SoftBank Group would take measures such as selling assets to ease financial pressure, but the timing and scale of these steps are unclear.
The Tokyo-based company, led by billionaire Masayoshi Son, said recently that it would invest an additional $30 billion in OpenAI this year, bringing its total investment in the ChatGPT maker to $64.6 billion. After this investment, SoftBank Group is expected to hold a 13% stake in OpenAI.
News Corp, owner of The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires, has a content-licensing partnership with OpenAI.
