Amazon Data Centers in U.A.E., Bahrain Damaged by Drone Strikes

By Kimberley Kao

Amazon.com's cloud unit warned of prolonged disruption after drone strikes damaged three of its facilities in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain due to the conflict in the Middle East.

Two data centers in the U.A.E. were directly hit, disrupting services, Amazon Web Services said on Monday. In Bahrain, a drone strike near one of its facilities damaged infrastructure.

The incidents occurred on Sunday as Iran responded to the U.S. and Israel military attacks by targeting countries across the region.

"We are working to restore full service availability as quickly as possible, though we expect recovery to be prolonged given the nature of the physical damage involved," AWS said in a statement. It said customers across both regions are experiencing elevated error rates and degraded service availability.

The company also recommended that customers using its services in the region back up their data and potentially migrate workloads to alternative AWS facilities. "The ongoing conflict in the region means that the broader operating environment in the Middle East remains unpredictable," it said.

President Trump on Monday said U.S. attacks on Iran are projected to last four or five weeks but could go longer. The U.S. said it is adding forces in the region, as Iran hit industrial and military sites across several Middle East countries.
