Telefonica in Talks to Buy Germany's 1&1, El Espanol Says, Citing Unnamed Sources

-- Telefonica is negotiating the acquisition of Germany's 1&1 in a deal valued in between 4.5 billion and 5 billion euros ($5.31 billion-$5.90 billion), Spanish online newspaper El Espanol reports, citing unnamed sources.

--Initial talks took place in November, but formal negotiations have now begun, the report says. The aim is to have clarity on the details of the operation before the end of the first half of the year, it adds.

-- Telefonica declined to comment when approached by El Espanol.
