China Reports Record Tourism Spending Over Lunar New Year Holiday
China reported record tourism revenue and trips during the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday, as the government extended the break to boost consumer spending.
Domestic tourism spending reached 803.5 billion yuan, equivalent to $117 billion, during the holiday that ended Monday, increasing by 126.5 billion yuan from the same period a year earlier, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said Tuesday.
Travelers made 596 million trips during the nine-day break, an increase of 95 million compared with the eight-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2025, the ministry said.
Both figures hit record highs, as authorities extended the holiday to encourage spending on food, travel and entertainment.
However, spending per trip stood at 1,348 yuan this year, slightly below last year's 1,351 yuan, suggesting consumers remained cautious, according to calculations by The Wall Street Journal.
