EU Lawmakers Could Halt Vote on U.S. Trade Deal After Supreme Court Ruling
By Edith Hancock
Lawmakers in the European Parliament could shelve a key vote on the European Union's trade deal with the U.S. following a Supreme Court ruling that President Trump's global tariffs are unlawful.
The possible pause comes after Trump said on Saturday he would raise a temporary global tariff--which replaces many of the levies judges ruled illegal--from 10% to 15%. The EU had already reached a political trade agreement with the U.S. last year.
The parliament had been working on ratifying legal texts that would lower tariffs on U.S. industrial goods but the Supreme Court ruling and Trump's response have triggered uncertainty in Europe.
"Pure tariff chaos from the US government. No one can make sense of it anymore," Bernd Lange, chair of the parliament's trade committee and a key negotiator on the legal pact, said in a post on X over the weekend, saying the terms on the EU and U.S.'s so-called Turnberry Agreement and the legal basis on which it was built have changed. "I will therefore propose to the EP-negotiating team putting legislative work on hold until we have a proper legal assessment and clear commitments from the US side," he said.
