FDA OKs AbbVie/Genentech/AstraZeneca Drug Combo in First-Line CLL
By Colin Kellaher
AbbVie and Genentech have won expanded Food and Drug Administration approval of their Venclexta cancer drug in combination with AstraZeneca's Calquence for previously untreated adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL.
The three companies on Friday said the FDA green light makes the combination the first and only all-oral, fixed-duration regimen in the first-line setting for patients with CLL, one of the most common forms of leukemia in adults.
The North Chicago, Ill., biopharmaceutical company and Genentech, a unit of Swiss drug giant Roche Holding, are jointly developing Venclexta. The drug is jointly marketed by AbbVie and Genentech in the U.S., and by AbbVie alone outside the U.S.
Venclexta and Calquence were already approved separately around the world for adults with CLL or small lymphocytic lymphoma.
