Meta Breaks Ground on $10 Billion Data Center Project in Indiana

Meta Platforms is breaking ground on a $10 billion data center project as it races to build out its artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

The Lebanon, Ind., project is designed to support one gigawatt of capacity, Meta's vice president for data centers Rachel Peterson said in a Wednesday blog post. It is expected to support more than 4,000 construction jobs and 300 operational positions. A completion date for the project wasn't given.

The new data center comes as Meta sets ambitious goals for AI spending. It said last month that capital expenditures would reach up to $135 billion this year as it prepares to release its newest AI models and integrate the technology deeper into the core of its advertising business.

"As AI advances and compute demands continue to grow, gigawatt sites like this one will be critical to advancing the technology that supports our core business as well as our AI ambitions," Peterson said.

The facility, about located 30 miles from Indianapolis, is Meta's second in the state following work on a project in Jeffersonville.

The company said it will match 100% of the Lebanon project's energy use with clean energy, adding that the facility is expected to receive LEED Gold Certification. It said it would restore all of the water it consumes for the project back to local watersheds.

Meta also said it will partner with Arable to bring irrigation technology to farmers in the region, revitalize a section of the Deer Creek stream, and fund a workforce development program in Boone County.
