Farm Credit Canada Raises C$5 Billion From Private Firms to Expand Lending Capacity — Update
By Paul Vieira
OTTAWA--Canada's state-owned agricultural lender says it has received billions in pledges from private-equity firms and one major Canadian bank that it is prepared to deploy to drive innovation on the country's farms.
Farm Credit Canada said Tuesday that over 20 investors -- led by Canada's largest bank, Royal Bank of Canada -- have collectively committed up to 5 billion Canadian dollars, or the equivalent of $3.7 billion, for the company to lend. Other commitments are from investment firms such as Maverix Private Equity, Northleaf Capital Partners and U.S.-based Seminal Capital Holdings.
The pledges "will strengthen Canada's leadership in agriculture and agri-food innovation, while charting a course for long-term growth, competitiveness, and resiliency for generations to come," said Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald, who is responsible for Farm Credit Canada.
Farm Credit Canada's loan portfolio is roughly C$63 billion, a spokeswoman said. The lender's corporate strategy includes expanding its investment portfolio, by attracting external capital.
