CK Hutchison Shares Fall After Panama Court Strikes Down Port Contract
By Tracy Qu
CK Hutchison's shares fell after Panama's Supreme Court ruled against the Hong Kong conglomerate running two ports on the Panama Canal.
The share decline came after the court said in a brief statement that license terms granted to CK Hutchison to run the ports of Balboa on the Pacific Coast and Cristobal on the Atlantic side were unconstitutional.
CK Hutchinson's shares fell 1.3% in early trade Friday and extended losses to 4.4% at the midday break following the court decision. The benchmark Hang Seng Index was down 1.8% as of the lunch break.
CK Hutchison didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
The decision had been closely watched in Washington and Beijing, and is seen as a key step in their broader dispute over the Panama Canal. At least 5% of global trade flows through the Panama Canal.
