5N Plus Secures $18.1 Million U.S. Government Grant to Increase Germanium Capacity

By Adriano Marchese

5N Plus said it has been awarded an $18.1 million grant by the U.S. government to improve its germanium-recycling operations in Utah.

The Montreal-based producer of specialty semiconductors and performance materials said Friday that the grant will be used to expand capabilities and increase capacity to recycle and refine germanium, a metalloid, at its St. George facility, which will feed into optics and solar germanium crystal supply chains.

Germanium is considered a strategic material critical for defense, telecom, and clean‑energy technologies. 5N manufactures and customizes high-purity germanium wafers, which are used in the manufacture of semiconductors, fiber-optic cables and solar cells, among others.

The grant was awarded as part of the U.S. government's Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production Executive Order.

5N expects to gradually increase its capabilities to recover germanium from industrial residues and mining by-products over the course of the next 48 months and allow it to valorize up to 20 metric tons of high-purity germanium per year.
