Corteva, BP Form Joint Venture to Produce Biofuels
By Connor Hart
Corteva and BP are partnering on a joint venture to manufacture crop oils for use in the production of biofuels, such as sustainable or synthetic aviation fuel, or SAF, and renewable diesel.
The companies said Wednesday that the venture, called Etlas, aims to produce 1 million metric tons of feedstock per year by the mid-2030s, which could produce over 800,000 metric tons of biofuel. Initial supply is expected to begin in 2027.
The partnership comes as demand for SAF and renewable diesel is growing. Global demand for SAF is expected to rise to as much as 10 million metric tons in 2030, from about 1 million metric tons in 2024, while global demand for renewable diesel could rise to as much as 35 million metric tons by 2030, from approximately 17 million metric tons in 2024, Corteva and BP said, citing industry estimates.
With the venture, Corteva will develop crops ideally suited to produce SAF and renewable diesel, while BP will refine and market fuel for the commercial transportation market.
Ignacio Conti, global business development director at Corteva, will serve as Etlas' chief executive. "As the aviation industry looks for reliable, sustainable and cost-competitive sources of SAF, it is clear farmers have a critical role to play," he said.
The feedstock Etlas uses will be harvested from crops grown on existing cropland, between main food-cropping seasons, the companies said, adding the move can help improve soil health, provide farmers with a new revenue stream and make use of existing cropland during times when it had previously been unproductive.
