Energy Department Awards Three $900 Million Task Orders for Uranium Enrichment
By Elias Schisgall
The Department of Energy awarded three $900 million task orders for uranium enrichment to American Centrifuge Operating, General Matter, and Orano Federal Services.
The commitments support President Trump's goal of enhancing energy security and reducing reliance on foreign energy, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said.
American Centrifuge and General Matter will work on increasing high-assay, low-enriched uranium capacity, while Orano Federal Services will work on low-enriched uranium. The agency also awarded $28 million to Global Laser Enrichment to continue developing next-generation uranium enrichment technology.
Centrus Energy, the parent company of American Centrifuge Operating, said it would leverage the federal funding to support a previously announced, multi-billion dollar expansion of its facility in Piketon, Ohio.
Centrus said the project will support 1,000 new construction jobs and 300 operating jobs, and retain 150 existing positions at the Ohio facility. It also projected hundreds of new roles at its centrifuge manufacturing plant in Tennessee, and estimated thousands of new, indirect jobs in both states.
