Amazon's Zoox Recalls All of Its Autonomous Cars Over Software Error

By Connor Hart

Autonomous car maker Zoox, an Amazon.com subsidiary, recalled more than 300 vehicles after it found a software error that may increase the risk of a crash.

The recall was initially prompted by an incident on Aug. 26 in which a Zoox vehicle made a wide right turn, crossed partially into the opposing travel lane and temporarily stopped in front of the oncoming travel lane, according to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Approximately 332 vehicles, or an estimated 100% of the company's fleet, operating with software versions released prior to Dec. 19 may have crossed the yellow center line and driven into or stopped in front of oncoming traffic at or near intersections, according to the NHTSA.

"There is a possibility that an oncoming agent may not notice or react to the stopped Zoox vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash, though no such collisions have occurred," the NHSTA report said.

The regulator said Zoox identified multiple root causes that resulted in unnecessary lane line crossings, including mislabeled double-parked vehicles, unexpected routing changes and poorly executed attempts to avoid blocking cross traffic in intersections.

Updated software was deployed to all impacted Zoox vehicles in use for public road operation, and all affected driverless fleet vehicles were repaired by Dec. 19, the company said.
