Consumer Cos Up on Holiday Shopping Optimism — Consumer Roundup
Consumer companies rose amid optimism about the holiday shopping season.
One strategist said recent stock-market gains likely bolstered year-end spending for wealthy Americans.
"The 'wealth effect' becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy," said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management. "If this market continues to rally, people are going to feel an increase in wealth; that allows spending to increase again; then creates bigger earnings, causes market to go up, makes people feel wealthier...and so the cycle continues."
Still, Joyce said a "K-shaped" economic expansion meant that large swathes of American consumers, and American service companies, will be left out of the boom. "A lot of the airlines are saying, 'Hey, overall travel is x, but our premium travel is x squared..." said Joyce.
Cosmetics giant Coty appointed Procter & Gamble veteran Markus Strobel as interim chief executive and board chair, part of a broader leadership overhaul amid a review of its consumer-beauty strategy.
