Eli Lilly Reports Positive Results for Oral Weight-Management Drug Trial
By Jiahui Huang
Eli Lilly & Co. reported positive topline results from a trial of its oral weight-management drug orforglipron.
In the Phase 3 trial, patients who had initially lost weight on Wegovy or Zepbound and were then switched to orforglipron. These patients maintained their weight better over a year than those given a placebo, the company said in a statement Thursday.
The results showed that "orforglipron, a once-daily oral GLP-1, helped people maintain the weight they worked hard to lose," said Kenneth Custer, the company's executive vice-president.
In the trial, participants who switched to orforglipron from Wegovy maintained all but 0.9 kg of their previously achieved weight loss on average, the statement added.
Orforglipron belongs to the same family of GLP-1-based weight-loss drugs as Lilly's rival Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Lilly's Zepbound, but can be administered orally rather than injected.
Lilly also has submitted a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for orforglipron for the treatment of overweight or obese adults.
