Woodside Energy to Search for Next CEO as O'Neill Leaves for BP

By Rhiannon Hoyle

Australia's Woodside Energy will search for a new chief executive officer after Meg O'Neill accepted the role of CEO at British oil giant BP.

Woodside said it has appointed Liz Westcott as acting CEO effective Thursday and that it intends to announce a permanent appointment in the first quarter.

Westcott has led Woodside's Australian operations since joining the Perth-based company in the middle of 2023. She was previously chief operating officer at utility EnergyAustralia, and spent 25 years at ExxonMobil in Australia, the United Kingdom and Italy, Woodside said.

BP confirmed O'Neill's appointment in a separate statement.

Woodside Chair Richard Goyder said the company "is fortunate to have a number of highly qualified internal candidates" for the role. Woodside will also assess external candidates, he said.

"Woodside's priorities for 2026 are clear," Goyder said. "Liz and her team will focus on safe and efficient operations, execution of major projects and retaining an unwavering focus on staying the strategic course laid out most recently at Woodside's November 2025 Capital Markets Day."
