Micron Technology 1Q Sales Jump 57%, Led By Memory Growth
By Katherine Hamilton
Micron Technology recorded a jump in sales in its fiscal first quarter, as demand for its memory products remains high.
The Boise, Idaho, memory-chip maker on Wednesday posted a profit of $5.24 billion, or $4.60 a share, in the quarter ended in late November, compared with $1.87 billion, or $1.67 a share, a year earlier.
Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted per-share earnings were $4.78, ahead of the $3.96 anticipated by analysts, according to FactSet.
Revenue rose 57% to $13.64 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast revenue of $12.91 billion.
Sales from Micron's cloud memory business made up $5.28 billion of that total.
In the current second quarter, Micron expects revenue to be $18.7 billion at the midpoint, with adjusted earnings per share of $8.42 at the midpoint. Analysts were projecting sales of $14.33 billion with adjusted earnings of $4.78 a share.
As more artificial-intelligence companies are using memory products, the cost of such products have skyrocketed.
Wedbush analysts estimate pricing for DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, will rise at least 30% through the end of this calendar year, while NAND pricing--or that for "not and" flash memory--could rise at least 20%. Analysts also see Micron's margins benefiting from the constrained supply.
Shares were up 2.2% to $237.59 in after-hours trading.
